VIDAS Platform: innovative solutions centred on people and the community

The VIDAS Platform (Innovative Pathways to De-institutionalisation through Learning in Society) is an initiative promoted by the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs and Agenda 2030, in which we have developed as Tangent  and together with Means Evaluation, The aim of the project is to transform the long-term care model in Spain.

This social innovation ecosystem seeks to move from an institutionalised system to one centred on human rights, promoting community integration and respecting individual choices about how and where to live.

From its start in 2022, the VIDAS Platform has brought together 20 pilot projects that address challenges related to the deinstitutionalisation of diverse groups, including people with disabilities, homeless people, children, young people and older people. These projects share a collective learning process to create a new model of person-centred, community-integrated care and services.

One of the Platform's major initiatives is the elaboration of a Portfolio of innovative solutions, which were tested in the framework of the pilot projects and compiles the lessons learned. This is a pioneering tool that will contribute to the expansion of good practices in the field. countrywide.

The VIDAS Platform has also encouraged the creation of Practice-oriented Learning Communities, The pilot projects share experiences and address common challenges, such as community activation, participatory strategies and care solutions in rural settings.

In addition, a research on imaginaries and narratives in deinstitutionalisation processes, The aim is to understand and promote the cultural change necessary for this social transformation. This mapping helps to identify trends and perceptions that facilitate or hinder the implementation of new models of person- and community-centred care.

In this way, the research results show that there are groupings in the major discursive trends in the way institutionalisation and deinstitutionalisation processes are understood and conceptualised: conformity, inevitability, ignorance, improvement and rupture. While some actors perceive institutionalisation as an unavoidable solution, others actively promote alternative models of community life.

The VIDAS Platform constitutes an innovative social ecosystem with a wide territorial deployment. This research has made it possible to address specific issues and challenges, promoting a paradigm shift. It also represents a collective effort to redefine the care system in Spain, promoting deinstitutionalisation and community integration, and placing the community and people at the centre of decisions about their own lives.
